›› Renovation work on the Grandval shopping mall, Orvault

The Grandval shopping mall in the Nantes suburb of Orvault was constructed almost thirteen years ago. Renovation work was needed on both the 107m-long store-lined commercial artery and the large Leclerc hypermarket building opening onto the mall. In order to stand apart from the decidedly modern ambiances of the many new shopping malls in the region, the prime contractor Nantes Nord Distribution chose to retain the classicism of the original volumes.

In the words of Marc Payraudeau: "We wanted a comfortable atmosphere which makes the visitor feel right at home." Architect Yves Leroux created four light wells to emit a soothing natural glow along the centerline of the artery. The old grid ceiling and flat sheet metal parts were removed and replaced with PLAtec machined plasterboard elements in clean and harmonious shapes. The air conditioning system was refitted, the sprinklers redistributed and the lighting entirely reworked.

The site remained open to the public throughout the six months of renovation work. The seven stages of the project were completed between May and November 2004, with the installation teams working on a shallow platform fitted beneath the roof. The architect explains: "The pre-cut PLAtec elements are assembled in the workshop; all that's left to do is install the elements on a metal frame, so a clean site was guaranteed. The plasterboard elements enabled us to treat the corner edges perfectly and produce surprisingly small buttered joints. It really is an excellent solution."
