PLAtec tables at Rendez Vous de l’Architecture in Paris

Jean Christophe Quinton's imagination recreates plasterboard as a structural material at Rendez Vous de l'Architecture

For the latest Rendez Vous de l'Architecture convention, Jean Christophe Quinton stepped up to the challenge of converting the gigantically proportioned reception room of the Palais de la Porte Dorée into a debating hall.

The architect envisioned a spectacular table for the participants to boldly take center stage and capture the attention of the audience.

PLAtec produced the table, composed of 14 plasterboard modules sized 200x77x73cm, and organized the technical design, machining, assembly and installation on site.

"This project inspired some remarkable work, from the precision of the computer-assisted angular work to the delicate installation of fine sheets of BA13. The bent plasterboard was left roughly finished to draw attention to the finesse of the material and expose the meticulously detailed work and assembly. The architects on the project became aware of the expressive capacity of this basic material. Rather than functioning as an end in itself, form plays a structural role here, enabling a flexible material to become naturally rigid. Solidity was introduced into the material through calculated bending. The resulting form is ultimately defined in a structural, material and geometrical convergence. As I see it, form is inseparable from the written word, and the written word is inseparable from the culture of the Project."
